Paint

MS Paint, the first app you used for editing images, will probably be killed off in future updates of Windows 10, replaced by the new app Paint 3D. Microsoft lists the 32-year-old app under “deprecated features” in Windows 10’s next autumn update, a little X marking the end of an era.

The app is certainly a relic, from a time when the casual computer user couldn’t crack open Photoshop or Skitch or Pixelmator or thousands of web apps. MS Paint can’t save image components as layers or vectors; it’s for making flat static images only. It doesn’t smooth lines or guess at your best intentions. It does what you tell it and nothing more, faithfully representing the herky-jerky motion of drawing freehand with a computer mouse. It’s from a time before touch, a time before trackpads.

As more sophisticated options appeared, Paint’s janky aesthetic became a conscious choice. “Paint” became the metonym for that aesthetic, even if an image was actually created in another app. TV Tropes lists major limitations that came to define a certain look: the wobbly freehand lines, awkward color handling, and inappropriate export settings that give Paint its distinctive look.

In 2014, Gawker’s Sam Biddle noted Paint’s influence on conspiracy theory images, calling the form “Chart Brut.” In amateur detectives’ attempts at identifying the Boston Marathon bombers, the simplicity and jaggedness of Paint evokes the “crazy wall” aesthetic of red string and scribbled notes, apparently without irony.

The same year, internet historian Patrick Davison explored Paint’s influence on the last decade of meme culture, particularly Rage Comics. The outsider-art aesthetic feels appropriate to the relatable everyday content, and makes the art form unthreatening.

Of course, Paint offered a few features to smooth things out, like the circle and line tools and the “fill” tool, all used in the stoner comics of the early 10s. Crucially, those circles still had jagged curves. The bright colors of stoner comics are flat, as MS Paint didn’t support gradients (without an elaborate hack).

Contrast those pixellated lines with the slick, stylish face from this art tutorial:

This slickness is built into Paint’s successor, Paint 3D. From the moment you start sketching, Paint 3D smooths out your art. (It also supports automatic selection tools and content-aware fill to rival Photoshop’s.)

By automatically improving art, Paint 3D hides the process behind the image. Paint’s sloppiness is probably why rage comics got so popular. Looking at a rage comic, you can tell exactly how it was drawn, and how you might draw one yourself. By delivering exactly what the artist draws, MS Paint forms an image that the viewer can mentally reverse-engineer and imitate.

Reddit user Toweringhorizon painstakingly assembled the drawing “To a Little Radio” using MS Paint tools like the oil brush, stretching the medium while maintaining a pixelated look. It’s one of the top submissions to MS Paint subreddit, a beautiful collaborative art gallery. Scrolling through this art feels like flipping through the sketchbook of the most artistic kid in high school. There’s an accepted roughness, a desired minimalism. For example, the exquisite raindrops in the work above are reflected in a flat, featureless tabletop. Like a transistor radio, Paint might be showing its age, but this tenacious little gadget should not be underestimated.

“To a Little Radio” doesn’t even come close to testing Paint’s limits. As we say goodbye to the app that shaped an era, let us watch this bizarrely soundtracked time lapse of drawing Santa Claus in MS Paint on Windows 7 over the course of 50 hours. We can only believe this is real because faking it would be even harder.

  1. How do I download it to read on my Kobo??

  2. A few years ago I started using Kindle on my PC. I never saw the point of owning the Kindle device because the only places I would read a book would be in my home or coffee shop where I can easily bring my laptop. Before then, I read a lot of paperback books and thought that reading on my computer would ruin the experience, but I easily got hooked. It is so much more convenient to download the next book in a series without going out to the store or waiting a few days for it to arrive in the mail. I can pick up exactly where I left off without leaving my chair. For free books, I signed up with BookBub. You can set your genre preferences, and they send me daily emails with books that I might be interested. Often, at the top of the list, are books I can download for free. They are usually the first of series books to get people interested.

  3. ' so bigtime readers will probably prefer a real Kindle'.

Nope. I prefer print, thank you very much. But when I do read ebooks, the devices I already own work perfectly well. I think ereaders are overrated. Turn down the backlight of your tablet to prevent eyestrain and it does everything an ereader can and more. There are perfect scans of print books online and eInk has nothing on them. The only downside is that the battery doesn't last as long as an ereader but my tablet lasts 24 hours easily and you're not gonna read for 24 hours plus.

  4. Thank you very much for this guide. It helped me and my friends a lot.

  5. Please tell the site with free kindle ebooks.

  6. What should i do if i want to have the book really downloaded on my PC? Like a real file. I don't have kindle but another ebook. What should i do then?

    • Search the synced books from this folder: ...Documents/My Kindle Content'

All the downloaded books via Kindle for PC are saved here.

    • send the file to google drive. it can open the pdf or epub & let you read the book on the pc

      • 'send the file to google drive'
That's ridiculous. You should be able to just download it DIRECTLY TO YOUR PC once you buy it, it is yours after all. They're going to make you jump through hoops when all they need to do is provide a direct download? Gee I wonder why.....

  7. Thank You so much,
I did it, got my book, now I can read on my desk top and my kindle
    thank you again.

  8. Nothing's happen after clicking orange button ??

    Just redirect to book page.

  9. is there a site for free e books, that is offline. I have a tablet and when I am traveling and not close to wifi it does not work. Help

    • I recommend finish the download of your books under Wifi connecting.

Then, when not close to wifi you can read eBooks freely.

  10. thanks for the info.
no need credit card just email add to reg at amazon and use it on your kindle for pc.
but the interface is different now though. no more drop down menu besides 'shop in kindle store' or search.
'sync and search for new items' seems to take too long to finish though

  11. Thanks for the comments lol I didn't try to download the app

  12. Hello! Thanks for the article. When I downloaded the software (12/12/09) I didn't haft to put in a credit card #. All I did was enter my amazon account and voilà ! Also, now they have lots more free books. Check it out, if you haven't already.

  13. If I'm not buying anything, what's up with insisting on a cc??

  14. The installation process was easy. Thanks for the clear instructions. I had an Amazon account, and I've downloaded a free book successfully.

Actually, the Kindle for PC is like a lightweight PDF reader. What I like is to be able to access Amazon Kindle store ebooks. And the Kindle is remembering the last location.

But the program is still in early stages. If you go to http://www.amazon.com/KindleForPCComingSoon you'll see that highlights and notes are coming soon. These are the basic features but lacking in Kindle for PC.

  15. Thanks keshav. Your tip was really helpful. :) Nice to see doctors active on makeuseof. Am an Internist....:)

  16. Check out Barnes & Noble's 'Nook,' to be available for purchase at the end of the month (www.nook.com). Assuming that it does what it says it does, it should blow Kindle out the water!

  17. 'the Kindle for PC, with the Mac version on it’s way!'

So having a PC automatically means you've got Microsoft Windows? And if you don't have a 'PC' you have a Mac? How quaint.

Elwood Blues: -'What kind of music do you usually have here?'
Claire: -'Oh, we got both kinds. We got country *and* western.'

    • And since when do marketers to a mass audience market to nix users? Use Wine or Parallels for the Windows or Mac conversion (parallels worked for me) and continue using whatever flavor of Linux makes your soul happy. :)

  18. Why on Earth would I want to go to all that trouble just to get what should be copyright free books into a proprietary, locked, DRM'd, remotely-deletable format on a PC only when I can have all of these and tons more in open formats that I can read for the next several hundred years on many devices including portable ones like my nice, high-res smart phone?

    STRANGE!

  19. There are other sites to search free kindle books.

One of the best is feedbooks:
http://www.feedbooks.com has loads of free books which can be downloaded in kindle format. First download kindle for PC. After downloading the books from feedbooks in Kindle format, double click on the downloaded file to automatically open in Kindle reader. Kindle reader itself does not have open (ctrl+o) option.

I hope I have added something.

  20. Went to Kindle on Amazon and 'No Free Books' all books seem to be $2.30, forget that.

  21. There is no free beer

  22. I have an account on amazon.com. However i can't find any free books either. The cheapest, including Dickens', is 2.30.
    :(

  23. I HAVE to give them access to a credit card? No thanks.
Even the free books require you to click on a button that says 'buy it', No thanks.
The whole process sounds intentionally confusing and kinda scammy.

  24. i set up the kindle no problem however when i went to the kindle store there were no free books, the cheapest available (including the Dickens) were USD2.30.
could my registering with an Amazon.co.uk rather than Amazon.com account be the cause?

    • Yes, amazon.co.uk may be the problem. Try this direct link

      • i followed the link to Amazon.com you kindly provided and had the same problem, no free books, until, after a bit of experimentation, i found that if you search for books in the sub-department 'Kindle Books' there are no freebies, but if you search for 'Kindle Books' in the main department 'Books' there they are.

  25. Hate it, unless I did something wrong or until they fix one thing. Your book appears to be bound to that device. So if I've got the reader on my iPhone and my PC, I want to read it on both (I take the iPhone places I do not take the laptop). Can I do that?
